![]() ![]() Strange Things VR is out on “major VR platforms” in winter 2023. That was largely thanks to the presence of Vecna, who finally puts something of a human, eminently punchable face on Stranger Things’ creepy world of the Upside Down. I won’t ruin season four of Stranger Things for you if you haven’t seen it yet, but it was probably the best the show’s been to date. Listen, VR games don’t usually get my attention very often but even I think this looks intriguing. ![]() Tender Claws have worked on a few VR adventures before, but this horror game is their first big licensed outing. This will apparently involve invading the subconscious of familiar Stranger Things characters, along with battling humans and Upsidedownian monsters with your brain-throbbing telekinetic powers. You’ll shepherd Vecna as he explores the Upside Down, mucking about with the otherworldly, alien contents therein to start bringing his evil plans for revenge together. Stranger Things VR delves into earlier seasons of the show than just season four. ![]() I’m not sure exactly how involved they are, but the trailer is suitably Stranger Things enough that it’s not that big a deal if they just looked at it and went “Yes, fine.” You can watch it for yourself below. The game’s been commissioned by Netflix, with the series writers involved in creating it. A good reason to play as many of them as you can just in case they get taken away.Ever fancied becoming the bad guy? Well, a new Stranger Things VR game that mixes psychological horror with action is coming from creative studio Tender Claws in 2023, and it casts you as telekinetic monstrosity Vecna. Netflix recently acquired developer Spry Fox, developer behind the Animal Crossing-adjacent Cozy Grove, so it's clear the streaming giant is still interested in expanding into the world of games, even if (as of August) only 1% of its user base is playing its games. It's unclear if the game is planned to directly tie into the show or if it's just its own thing, but either way it seems like a pretty cool way to experience the story of a fan-favourite villain. "As fans, we want this game to be very special and we are energised by the support and enthusiasm we've received from Netflix and the Stranger Things creative team." "We are awed that we get to live within the Stranger Things universe and dive into the rich inner worlds of its characters through Tender Claws' unique approach to nested worlds and immersive dreamscapes," said directors Samantha Gorman and Danny Cannizzaro shared in a joint statement. It's also planned for all major VR platforms, though no specifics on which those are, and should be launching winter 2023, but again no more details than that. The game is described as a "pyschological horror/ action game," so presumably not one for the faint of heart. ![]() Taking on this role, you'll be invading the memories and dreams of characters from the show, and you can "harness telekinetic powers to battle humans and creatures alike" (via Eurogamer). Strangers Things VR is being made in collaboration with Netflix from Virtual Virtual Reality developer Tender Claws, and rather than letting you play as one of the kids, this time round you're playing as season four's big bad Vecna. If you watched Stranger Things season four, took one look at Venca and thought 'god I wish that were me,' you're in luck, because Stranger Things VR makes that dream come true! ![]()
